Hemingway, when not on a road trip, had a hard life, wrote about a hard life, and chose his hotels with alarming precision. He found beauty and stories in each check-in. From balconies over the ocean in Havana to jazz nights in Paris. He didn't just sleep in these five hotels; these hotels were also living characters in his story, as they had elegance, history, and loads of Hemingway swagger.

Join us as we retrace Hemingway’s footsteps through five iconic hotels that still carry his unmistakable charm and spirit.

Ritz Paris Hemingway Bar

Ritz Paris

Hemingway's legendary "liberation" of the Ritz Hotel in Paris with a band of soldiers during World War II was because he loved the hotel. He thought of the Ritz Hotel as his "home" in Paris and spent hours at the bar, now known as Bar Hemingway. Now there is a decadent Hemingway Suite at the Ritz, all adorned with awards won by the author. If you want to live the actual slight taste of literary aristocracy, you must visit this prestige-draped building with historic significance.

Hemingway Travel Hotels

Hotel Ambos Mundos, Havana

Hemingway spent much of the 1930s living and working at the Hotel Ambos Mundos in Old Havana. His typewriter, pictures, and a few personal items remain in Room 511, where he worked on For Whom the Bell Tolls. The pink facade, rooftop views, and retro lobby take you to another time. Ambros Mundos is not just a hotel: it is a living memorial of Hemingway's deep connection to Cuba.

Palace Gritti Venice

The Gritti Palace, Venice

Hemingway's Venetian hideaway was the Gritti Palace. He loved the antique glamour, view of the canals, and lavish charm. He often enjoyed cocktails with meals at Club del Doge, with its view of the Grand Canal. Since Hemingway's time, the hotel's favorite suite has been renamed in his name, and the suite now includes tributes to Hemingway. Gritti has a traditional style with a dash of literary charm, for couples looking for a romantic Hemingway-style experience in Venice.

Pera Palace Hotel Turkey

Pera Palace, Istanbul

Pera Palace Hotel, built in 1892, was meant to accommodate passengers coming in on the Orient Express, one of whom was Hemingway. It was probably appealing to him as it has enough intrigue to excite him - part Belle Epoque dazzle, part gloomy mysteriousness. It is one of the finest examples of East and West, complete with a lounge dedicated to Agatha Christie and a bar that would fit comfortably into 1920s Istanbul nightlife. It is understated, charming, and has a remarkably diverse history, which Hemingway fans certainly will appreciate.
