Constructed around 1886, the estate originally served as a grand residence (haveli) for prominent merchant families during the twilight years of Mughal influence. The property eventually fell into decay before undergoing a rigorous six-year restoration project led by heritage enthusiasts and craftsmen. Because heavy construction machinery could not enter the narrow alleys, workers renovated the structure manually using period-accurate materials - including lime mortar, surkhi (crushed terracotta), and original red Lakhori bricks. These conservation efforts preserved the jharokhas (carved stone balconies), intricate archways, and structural wooden beams. In 2017, the restoration received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
