HISTORY & ARCHITECTURE

The estate launched in 1920 when local visionary Paul Roux and his wife Baptistine established a humble open-air dance hall and tavern initially named À Robinson. By 1931, the couple expanded the venue into a charming hotel and dining destination, renaming it La Colombe d’Or (The Golden Dove). Throughout the mid-20th century, particularly during World War II, the property became a safe haven for pioneering creators fleeing political turmoil or seeking creative solitude in the South of France.

The physical compound was meticulously constructed using ancient stone blocks rescued from a destroyed castle near Aix-en-Provence, featuring a rustic hearth designed by visionary architect Jacques Couelle. Instead of purchasing artwork through commercial art dealers, the Roux family extended warm hospitality to struggling bohemian creators by exchanging hot meals, local wine, and guest rooms for original paintings, sketches, and ceramics. This intimate bartering tradition resulted in masterpieces by icons like Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, and Georges Braque permanently adorning the inn's whitewashed plaster walls.
