Mendi Shares the art of mixology and his journey as a Cocktail Influencer on Instagram
What inspired you to start creating cocktail content on Instagram and how has the journey been since then?
I was actually looking to put myself out there and start with some content. I was looking for a category of content where I can so something fun. I didn't want to do any serious stuff. I realized that in India the education around alcohol, cocktails etc was very low. So I thought let’s start with educating India about cocktails. I specifically chose Hindi as a language of communication because there weren’t any creators who were doing so and I found a gap. The journey has been very enriching, have got a lot of love from the followers who relate my looks with Pablo Escobar, voice with Farhan Akhtar and my delivery like Aamir Khan. Its so much fun!

In your opinion, what distinguishes a luxury cocktail experience from a more casual one?
A luxury cocktail is something that attends to all the five senses.
Taste - It has to be balanced in terms of the harness of alcohol well balanced with sour, sweet or spice
Smell - 70% of our taste comes from smelling. That’s why we cant taste when we have cold. Hence mixologists spray the cocktail with oils like orange peel, lemon peel etc
Look - It should be a delight to see the cocktail with the right glassware and the right garnish. Clear ice is a must
Sound - this is something I believe just elevates the experience, the clinking of the ice with the glassware has to be very unique. There are these Japanese glassware which give you that experience
Touch - The right texture on the glassware can achieve that.

When reviewing high-end cocktails, what specific characteristics do you focus on to highlight their luxury appeal, and how do you communicate that to your audience?
A high end cocktail has to be complex, yet so simple. It is a piece of art which the mixologist crafts for you. A story that the cocktail brings adds a layer of mystique to it. Crafting a unique cocktail which tells you a local story, the story that marries well with the theme of the bar can make the experience very wholesome. When reviewing such a cocktail, I like to know the story and explain the complexity in making that cocktail. What must the mixologist thinking when making that one.

What trends in mixology are you most excited about right now?
I am particularly very excited about infusions and molecular mixology. Use of various essential oils as a spray garnish also is a great way to elevate a cocktail. It could be an absinthe rinse or a smoky whisky spray. Clarified cocktails are a new trend which adds a lot of visual drama and mystery to the cocktail.

For someone looking to elevate their home cocktail-making game, what essential tools or ingredients would you recommend?
Somebody looking to elevate their home bartending should invest in a good equipment. A good shaker, jigger, muddler is a must. One should also understand the need for different glassware. There is a reason that a particular cocktail is served in a particular glassware. It elevates the sensory experience. One should also make a budget and build a bar collection of spirits of liking.
Cocktail Reviews
For those looking to carve out a niche in the luxury mixology space, what advice would you offer to help them stand out and succeed?
I recommend two books. Liquid Intelligence and Cocktail Codex. Read them over and over again and practice each time. It would require a lot of expenditure on the spirits and equipment but that is the way to go. No school will teach you more than these 2 books. Its the practice that counts.

What are your future goals for your content and brand? Are there any exciting projects or collaborations on the horizon that you can share with us?
I would continue on my journey to educate the country on everything around alcohol. I make content for fun and that is something that’s most important to me. I am also thinking of launching an online course for home mixology enthusiasts to learn from. Lets see how it goes.
