The Moscow Mule is a famous vodka-based drink for solid reason: it's tasty, refreshing, and easy to create. The very mention of the drink conjures up thoughts of the ice-cold copper mug that has become the customary receptacle for the Moscow Mule.

Moscow Mule History

The Moscow Mule is a mid-century classic that was created in 1941 and contributed to the popularity of vodka in America. According to mythology, it was created by two men. John Martin needed to market Smirnoff vodka, a new and somewhat obscure liquor that his distribution business had recently acquired.

Moscow Mule Mug History

Another guy, bar owner Jack Morgan, sought to get rid of the ginger beer that was taking up space at his Cock 'n' Bull bar. They decided to mix the two components, along with a squeeze of lime, and the rest is history. Except for the Mug. Nobody knows where that came from, although there are stories of a third person at the meeting who happened to have a surplus of copper mugs.

Whatever method was used to create the cocktail, the easygoing combination of vodka, spicy ginger, and acidic lime, all neatly packed in an eye-catching mug, was a success. It's still a hit more than a quarter-century later.
