What Is Mai Tai Drink

One of the most well-known Tiki cocktails in the world is the Mai Tai. It's been a favourite of cocktail fans and Tiki fanatics for decades, and it's made with rum, orange curaçao, fresh lime juice, and orgeat (a subtle almond syrup). It even had a cameo in the Elvis Presley film "Blue Hawaii."


While the Mai Tai was meant to highlight the flavours of high-quality rum, it went wrong over the years as bartenders used canned juices and mixers. These resulted in neon-coloured or extremely sugary drinks. Fortunately, a resurgence of interest in Tiki drinks has reintroduced the Mai Tai as a light, balanced, rum-forward beverage.

Method -:


Step 1.

In a shaker with crushed ice, combine the white rum, curaçao, lime juice, and orgeat. Shake gently (about 3 seconds).


Step 2.

Fill a double rocks glass halfway with ice and pour in the cocktail.


Step 3.

Pour the dark rum on top.


Step 4.

Garnish with a wedge of lime and a sprig of mint.

According to legend, the first person to drink the cocktail exclaimed: "Mai Tai!" which translates to "the best—out of this world" in Tahitian.

Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron is widely credited with creating the cocktail at his Trader Vic's bar in the 1940s, although Donn Beach's Don the Beachcomber bar is more likely to have set the basis for the renowned formula in the 1930s. J. Wray & Nephew rum from Jamaica was used in the original Trader Vic's recipe. When Bergeron's supply ran out, he experimented with combining rums to get a similar flavour profile.


Today's bartenders follow in the footsteps of their predecessors, combining rums to achieve the best balance of taste, depth, and complexity. A crisp white rum and a darker overproof rum are used by some bartenders. Others prefer green Rhum Agricole and high-ester Jamaican rums. There is no one-size-fits-all solution, but when developing your rum mix, keep four factors in mind: ABV, age, manufacturing techniques, and the raw ingredients utilised in the manufacture.
